The nominees for the 2022 Award of Excellence for Community Service are:
Riverbend Bridge in Port Alberni, known locally as the Orange Bridge for its original colour, crosses the Somass River as part of the Highway 4 corridor and enters the Tseshaht First Nation, where the Alberni Indian Residential School operated nearby between 1900 and 1973.
The bridge was painted in a silver undercoat in the mid-1990s. After hearing from residential school survivors, the Tseshaht First Nation indicated they would like support to return the bridge to its original orange as a reminder of the community’s painful past, as well as a symbol of their resilience. Mainroad Mid-Island approached their leadership to offer their support by acquiring the paint and supplies and developing a traffic management plan to successfully execute the project.
On September 27, 2022, ministry staff joined Mainroad and members of the Tseshaht First Nation to paint the concrete bridge abutments and barriers, adding the words “Every Child Matters” to the barrier leading up to the Tseshaht First Nation administrative office. In addition, Mainroad participated in the placement of cedar boughs on the bridge top in preparation for the observance of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Mainroad Mid-Island Contracting contributed to this opportunity to create a meaningful monument out of a bridge that was once a symbol of trauma.

Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Vanderhoof) Ltd. supported their community by responding to the needs of the Cluculz Lake Volunteer Fire Department (CLVFD). Having recently taken possession of a new fire hall whilst operating with a nominal budget, CLVFD was in significant need of community supports for the creation of a compact lot around their fire hall such that the space could be used for training and storage of fire-fighting equipment.
In early August of 2022, Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Vanderhoof) Ltd. dispatched not only a series of heavy equipment to the firehall but also a significant amount of crush and other material for the creation of this lot. Free of charge, Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Vanderhoof) Ltd. turned an unusable space into an aesthetic and highly functional area to the benefit of their community.
