Capital Division

The Capital Division leads the planning and delivery of major capital facility projects across BC Corrections.

This team is committed to sustainable, long-range planning; evidence-based correctional centre design; and using technology effectively for security, surveillance and building management.

At the core of the division’s planning are the four priorities in BC Corrections’ strategic plan: support our staff, advance correctional supervision, address Indigenous over-representation, and support individuals with complex needs. Supporting our staff is the team’s first priority because of the importance of providing them with the safe working environments they need to focus on helping people to change their behaviour.

Projects the division is currently managing include:

  • The replacement of Nanaimo Correctional Centre to address to evolving needs of Vancouver Island’s in-custody population.
  • Renovation of segregation and related areas in centres throughout B.C. to better meet the needs of individuals requiring more focused case management.
  • Upgrades to Community Corrections offices in all regions of the province to better address staff safety and improve program delivery.

Since 2008, the division has completed approximately $700 million in major capital projects to address capacity pressures and program needs throughout the province.

Recent major capital projects have included construction of a work program facility at Ford Mountain (Xàws Schó:lha [house-Shhka-law]) Correctional Centre, the Okanagan Correctional Centre, and expansions of Surrey Pretrial Services Centre, Alouette Correctional Centre for Women and Prince George Regional Correctional Centre.
