1888: Appeal for separate custody for incarcerated juveniles

Last updated on July 30, 2021

Although few were imprisoned, male juvenile offenders were occasionally kept in the same gaol as adults.

The issue of segregation was raised in 1888 regarding the handling of juvenile offenders in B.C. gaols. A select committee appointed to investigate the condition and operation of the Victoria Gaol recommended segregation of youthful prisoners from older prisoners.

Bastion Square Gaol (Victoria, B.C.) was built in 1858 and used as a gaol until 1885.
