Indigenous Articling Students

Last updated on April 12, 2024

We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in our teams and to Indigenous voices in the legal profession. Each year, one of our articling student positions is reserved for a candidate who self-identifies as Indigenous. The Indigenous articling student position enjoys the same opportunities as all other articling students, including the potential opportunity to continue as legal counsel with the Legal Services Branch (LSB) after their articles.

In late 2020, the Articled Student Program partnered with LSB’s Indigenous Employees Collective and the BC Public Service Agency to create two informative videos for Indigenous law students and graduates who are considering applying with LSB. Please click the links below to hear directly from an Indigenous articling student and lawyer on their experiences articling and working with LSB.

Rebecca Watmough, Articled Student

Johnny Van Camp, Legal Counsel

Potential applicants who are interested in speaking with an Indigenous lawyer about their experiences working for LSB may do so by contacting Michelle Li, Articling Student Manager. One of us would be happy to connect with you and answer your questions.

If you are interested in applying for an Indigenous articled student position, an Indigenous recruitment specialist can assist you with your application through the BC Public Service’s Indigenous Applicant Advisory Service. To learn more about this service please visit the Indigenous Applicant Advisory Service page or contact indigenousapplicants@gov.bc.ca.
