Meet Our Students

Evan Benson - Evan has received his BA in philosophy from the University of British Columbia Okanagan, has completed Alternative Dispute Resolution B.C.'s National Introductory Mediation Course, and has joined the 2024 JD graduating class of Peter A. Allard School of Law. Evan is an avid dancer, board game enthusiast, and a recreational athlete. He is passionate about empowering local communities, improving the lives of the people around him, and rekindling a connection with nature.

Fleurie Hunter - Fleurie (she/her) is a graduate of University of Victoria’s joint degree in Canadian Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders (JD/JID). She is of Ukrainian and Scottish/Irish descent, grew up on Treaty 1 territory, and now lives on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Fleurie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Global Resource Systems from UBC, and a Master’s Degree in Social Policy and Planning from York University. Her professional background is in management and administration in the health and social sectors, and most recently she worked with the Province of B.C.’s Declaration Act Secretariat. She is a volunteer Board Member of Canadian Lawyers for Ukraine and B.C.’s Youth Climate Corps. In her free time Fleurie likes to read, experience music/art, watch films, dance, be outside (trail running, skiing, swimming), and spend time with family and friends.

Rachael Khamphasouk - Rachael (she/her) was born and raised just outside Whitehorse, Yukon, on the traditional territories of the Carcross/Tagish and Kwanlin Dün First Nations. While she maintains a strong connection to her Northern roots, Rachael has embraced the opportunity to trade the snow for the milder winters of the Island. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Victoria (UVic), where her interest in constitutional and health law developed. Passionate about public service, Rachael strives to make a meaningful impact in her community. During her final year at UVic, she served as president of the OUTLaws club, promoting inclusivity and raising awareness of 2SLGBTQ+ issues within the legal field. In her spare time, Rachael enjoys making sourdough bread, boxing, and spending time by the ocean with her dog.

Nicholas Loughton - Nick is a new graduate of University of Victoria Law (UVic). Born and raised in Victoria, he attended the University of Calgary where he studied biomedical sciences. In his free time, he enjoys golfing and sailing with friends, and spending time with his dog Skippy. 

Cassie Lumsden - Cassie recently received a Juris Doctor with a concentration in environmental law and sustainability from the University of Victoria and is returning to article in the Vancouver office after summering with Legal Services Branch (LSB) last year. Prior to attending law school, Cassie received a BSc. in Geographical Sciences and a minor in English from the University of British Columbia. From school and previous positions held with the Government of B.C., Cassie is interested in environmental law and policy, administrative law, and working with legislation and policy in general. In her free time, Cassie plays golf and competitive softball. 

Clancy McDaniel - Clancy McDaniel (she/her) is a proud Cape Bretoner turned West Coast convert, who graduated from the University of Victoria (UVic) Faculty of Law in 2024. While at UVic, she served as President and Vice President Finance of the University of Victoria Law Students’ Society and was awarded the Diana Priestly Award for outstanding service to the law school community. Clancy’s interest in the intersection between law, public policy, and the public service drew her to the Ministry of Attorney General, where she is excited to use these passions to serve British Columbians. Outside of school and work, Clancy loves checking out Victoria’s many beaches, going for long walks with friends, and being a devoted mom to her cat, Camille.

Ben Risk - Originally from Ottawa, Ben completed his undergraduate degree in Public Policy at Carleton University. He completed his Juris Doctor  at the Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. During law school, he worked as a Clinician with Allard's International Justice and Human Rights Clinic where he focused on international environmental law. He also participated in the Laskin moot that greatly improved his knowledge of administrative law, but only slightly improved his French. In his free time, Ben likes to hike, ski, and climb. He also grew up paddling the rivers of Ontario and Quebec and takes any opportunity to get back out on the water.

Eric Shapiro - Eric grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, where he completed his degree in sociology and urban planning at the University of Alberta. Eric then moved to the West Coast and completed his JD at the University of Victoria, with a concentration in Environmental Law and Sustainability. He is excited to begin his career at LSB and to explore his interests of environmental law, administrative law, and litigation. In his spare time, Eric enjoys exploring the beautiful Fraser Valley with his fiancee, spending time with his nephews, and staying home to read books and play with his mischievous cat Amethyst.
