Recovery works at this site include river bank restoration. This work will against future flooding events. The Province is also helping to maintain significant cultural sites. Traditional food gathering areas will also be maintained.
The Cheam First Nation Grand Chief Douglas Memorial Building (GCDMB) site is located on the south bank and outside bend of the Fraser River. This site is vulnerable to erosion.
Damage occurred to two existing boat launches and no longer provide safe functional usage.
Due to the ARE damage to the riverbank, the GCDMB was at increased risk during high river levels and flows.

Risk Evaluation
Public Health and Safety
Reduced usability of the boat launch for fishing and commercial activities during times of low river levels. Damaged riprap presents an increased likelihood of bank failure during high flow events. This may be a safety risk for campground users.
River Capacity
No anticipated impact to the Fraser River capacity.
Environmental
The First Nation has concerns about the sediment impacting the traditional fishing site. This represents an important food source to the community.
Infrastructure
Damaged riprap presents an increased likelihood for bank failure and/or retreat. This creates an increased risk of damage to existing campground infrastructure.
