The Ministry of Finance's Internal Audit & Advisory Services (IAAS) provides independent and objective assurance and advice to support effective financial management, governance, accountability and performance management practices.

IAAS supports the Treasury Board in addressing their responsibility for effective governance and financial management in the government of British Columbia.

The branch's assurance and advisory activities are guided by corporate risk assessments, the annual audit plan and audit engagements that assess and provide advice on the operations of ministries, Crown corporations and funded agencies.

The team participates in a variety of projects ranging from assurance regarding the effectiveness of internal controls to comprehensive assessments of program performance and information systems.

Career Options

Executive director

The executive director provides leadership and authoritative advice to facilitate, lead, manage and perform a wide range of assurance and advisory projects.

Projects include corporate audit and advisory work and may include program or performance audits, control or compliance audits, benchmarking exercises or IM/IT audits.

Directors and audit managers

Directors and audit managers lead, manage and perform a wide range of assurance and advisory projects.

This work includes managing complex, high-profile projects concurrently and providing strategic advice to senior executives across the B.C. public sector. In a supervisory role, these positions lead and mentor multiple audit teams comprised of various levels of designated professional staff.

Director, IM/IT and audit manager, IM/IT

Both positions lead and conduct performance audits and advisory services with focus on the information management and information technology (IM/IT) environment.

Projects include complex IT audits and reviews of major information systems and IT governance areas in the public sector to ensure alignment with generally accepted frameworks and consistency with strategic direction.

As required, both positions also plan and conduct non-IT reviews.

Senior auditors and auditors

Both positions conduct and lead performance audits and advisory services, including research and analysis, review of information provided to the IAAS, interviews with ministries, Crowns and other agencies, preparation of reports and drafting of recommendations.

Senior auditor, IM/IT and auditor, IM/IT

In addition to non-IT projects, these key roles lead and conduct audits of information systems, including governance and management of IT within the public sector, IT procurement, application development and implementation, IT security practices and data management.
