Engineer-in-Training/Geoscientist-in-Training

The program is designed to help new graduates build knowledge, confidence, and competence as they become established in their new career.

Participants will be given the chance to build on their strong educational foundation with firsthand work experience. Full-time permanent employment with us includes a comprehensive training plan and rotations around the province. EIT/GITs will be assigned mentors who will share their lifetime of work experience and provide them with advice and direction.

Program participants will be hired into a permanent position and compensated as a Licensed Science Officer (LSO 1) until they become a registered professional with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). They will spend their first four years working towards becoming a registered professional engineer or geoscientist.

The ministry is an accredited employer with EGBC. This allows participating EITs to become registered on the employer’s recommendation and their applications are expedited through the low-risk pathway towards professional registration.

In the last year of the program, participants will focus on learning more ministry-specific required experience and be compensated as an LSO 2. Upon completion of this last year, they be placed in their final position within the ministry and be fully compensated as a LSO 3 (DPE/Geoscientist classification).

The EIT/GIT Program

The program is an opportunity to gain applied technical and management experience by working on challenging projects with increasing levels of responsibility.

There are multiple job and geographic rotations over the course of the program, giving participants the opportunity to train, develop and grow professionally.

This program is a great way to build a diverse portfolio and develop a thorough knowledge of the ministry.

Competitive compensation

This is the compensation EIT/GITs can expect to receive:

  • As a regular full-time employee and member of the Professional Employees Association, they will start with a salary in the LSO 1 classification grid
  • The step (level of pay) in the series will be based on their level of education and relevant experience, plus compensation for overtime available as pay or time in lieu
  • Upon receipt of professional engineer or geoscientist designation from Engineers & Geoscientists BC, EITs/GITs receive not less than 8% above the employee's current salary or the minimum salary of the new range, whichever is greater
  • Once EITs/GITs receive their professional designation and have the required amount of experience, typically after 5 years, they will be placed at their final location within B.C.
  • Benefits are an important part of their total compensation package
    • On average, benefits add over 20% to overall compensation
