Varieties
Bouquet, Long Island Mammoth.
See your seed dealer for the most recent variety recommendations.
Soils
A well-drained sandy loam is suitable.
Seeding
Seeds are sown in shallow drills 30 cm apart. The seedlings are thinned to 20 cm apart when about 7.5 cm high. For use with dill pickles, seed 1 week earlier than pickling cucumbers.
Fertilizer
A soil test is necessary to determine phosphate and potash requirements. Use the Vegetable Production Guide: Nutrient Management (PDF) for recommendations based on soil test results. The crop should not be over-fertilized with nitrogen or it will produce excess leaves and stalk at the expense of seed.
Prior to planting broadcast and incorporate nitrogen at 40 kg/ha (16 kg/acre) and all the required phosphate and potash.
Harvesting
For use with dill pickles, cut or pull stalks after the majority of seed pods have formed but are still green.

BUFFERS – Refer to product label for buffer requirements, and consult the Vegetable Production Guide: Pesticide Regulations and Safety (PDF).
PESTICIDE GROUP DETAILS – see the Vegetable Production Guide: Pesticide Toxicity Table (PDF).
Aphids
To monitor aphids on dill, it is essential to check plants when they are 2.5 cm tall and treat at intervals thereafter when aphids are seen. To check for aphids, shake plants vigorously over a piece of paper or over the hand. If aphids are present, they will fall off the plant onto the paper or hand. Pyganic, Neudosan and Opal are registered for control of aphids in herbs.
Parsley Butterfly Larva
These are green worms with yellow stripes which will grow to over 5 cm long. They are never very numerous so it may be practical to hand-pick the worms and destroy them. No chemical controls are registered.
